About this listen

A brand-new production of Andy Weir’s modern sci-fi classic, narrated by the incomparable Wil Wheaton, and featuring bonus content from the writings of Mark Watney.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills - and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit - he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

Wil Wheaton, who has lent his voice to sci-fi blockbusters like Ready Player One and Redshirts, breathes new life (and plenty of sarcasm) into the iconic character of Mark Watney, making this edition a must-listen for both longtime fans of The Martian and new listeners alike.

BONUS MATERIAL: This edition includes the following extras:

  • “Diary of an AssCan” - Mark Watney, new astronaut
  • “I Made It!” - A happy letter to Mom
  • “Car Trouble” - A somewhat sad letter to Mom
  • “The Earthling” - A postscript. *Available for the first time in this recording

I loved the previous narration of this book!
Please make the original version available for those who wish to purchase it. RC Bray was perfect.

Bring Back RC Bray Version

Ok I'll be honest, at this point I've only listened to the Bonus Features because I've already heard RC Bray's narration of the book. (both are worth it and available on Audible so go get it too) but Wil is a fantastic reader and helps bring the worlds he reads to life.
The Martian is a fantastic story and deserves to be the fantastic movie it was, but the book (naturally) goes so much deeper. And as much fun as RC's reading is, (especially after listening to the Bonus) I'm looking forward Wil's interpretation of the story. It's like listening to a familiar song with a new arrangement. The words are familiar but the tune is different. (A great example of this is "One Day" by Casting Crowns vs it's traditional hymn tune)
I'm looking forward to spending 3 months on Mars with Mark Whatney again!

*Like Sheldon* WHEEEEATTTTON!!!!

It’s really a shame they couldn’t come to an agreement with the original audio publisher. The RC Bray version was fantastic, and was singlehandedly responsible for a few of my friends getting into audiobooks. And I love Wil Wheaton, but the re-record is just not as good. In particular, RC Bray was great at distinguishing character voices, but it’s like Wil Wheaton didn’t even try. I’m pretty disappointed in this release.

The original was better

I’ve read the book, and seen the movie. I had little hope that the Audible version would bring anything new to The Martian. Soooo wrong. Mr. Wheaton brought something to the MC that really filled it out to an “actual person”. Sure, Matt Damon IS Marc Whatney, but making that character come to life through narration alone is a whole other level. By the time I finished the Audible version, I could see Matt Damon’s face in my mind’s eye, but it was Will Wheaton’s voice and inflection I could hear. Just a superb job over a VERY long and intense book, Mr. Wheaton. Thanks ever so much!

Thank You, Will Wheaton!

First, this book is great. Tons of good homie, action, suspense, and everything else. Unfortunately, while Will Wheaton is a good guy and all, he's very flat when narrating audio books. He doesn't even *try* to change his voice when reading different characters, which is frustrating when two or more characters are having a conversation. He also doesn't have much emotional range in his reading either.

Fortunately, most of this book is just one character, so the narration isn't too harmful to the experience. If you enjoy sci-fi, space, science, or just a good story, you'll probably enjoy this book. Highly recommended.

Great story with mediocre narrator.

Great story!!! And so very funny!!! Thank you Andy Weir! And thank you Wil Wheaton for doing the reading. I've heard "Ready Player One" read by Wil Wheaton and I always fine myself going back to relisten. This is my next favorite audiobook read by Wil Wheaton.

One word..... AWESOME!

Its an incredibly believable, interesting, and grounded piece of scifi fiction. You hardly have to suspend any disbelief, because it doesn’t feel that far fetched to begin with, but its terribly exciting. Two thumbs up, Fonzie style!!

Best Sci Fi since Jurassic Park
